Thor Halvorssen Equates Socialism to Human Rights Violations

Thor Halvorssen of the Human Rights Foundation was recently the featured guest on Fox Business Network’s show “The Intelligence Report with Trish Regan.” Halvorssen was interviewed to provide his unique take on socialism, which he contends can be linked to massive human rights abuses by governments all over the world. The context of the interview was that Bernie Sanders has been promoting a variety of socialist policies for America during his presidential campaign. Even though Halvorssen actually donated to Senator Sanders’ campaign, he takes issue with some of the socialist policies that Sanders has been promoting. According to Buzzfeed, the reason that Halvorssen says he is a  Halvorssen says that Clinton is a much bigger threat to the protection of human rights than Sanders because she has been known to actually conspire with dictators who abuses their citizens’ human rights on a daily basis.

A socialist government will also be responsible for fixing prices, which can drive up the demand for certain essential goods. This can ultimately result in massive food shortages throughout the country. In a dire situation like this, Halvorssen says it is the people who ultimately suffer because the government has gotten out of control. Not having access to essential resources like food and water is a serious violation of human rights, according to Halvorssen. Halvorssen is especially concerned about the rights of the lowest classes in society because they typically lack the resources and power to rise up against the government and correct its course. If this situation goes on long enough, Thor Halvorssen says that a country can be steeped in serious turmoil, which could lead to violence and political upheaval. A socialist government may try to crush this type of turmoil or uprising, which could end in massive human rights violations against its own people. Halvorssen says that the effects of socialism are much more complicated than most people think.
