A Look into the Larkin and Lacey’s Controversial Presidential Pardon

Throughout the United States history, there have been several strange and controversial presidential pardons. One of the most recent controversial pardons was the pardoning of Joe Arpaio, America’s ruthless sheriff of Maricopa County, by President Donald Trump.

The sheriff is known for his notoriety and scandalous acts of wrongly arresting and imprisoning Jim Larkin and Michael Lacey.

About a decade ago, Maricopa County Selective Enforcement Unit officers under the cover of darkness arrested Larkin and Lacey in Phoenix, Arizona. Under the command of Joe Arpaio, the county agents raided the two homes, captured and arrested the two authors for allegedly disclosing sensitive information about a grand-jury process that was on going in the county.

Both the authors were part of the Village Voice Media Newspaper where Michael Lacey was its executive officer and Jim Larkin its Chief Executive Officer.

Before they were arrested, they published and released an article disclosing the investigation of a grand jury in the Phoenix New Times, a Village Voice Media publication.

Sheriff Arpaio was angered by the media coverage about his bellicose law enforcement schemes of his office since he became the sheriff in 1992. His notorious Ten City as well as his several orders against women and inmates especially immigrants were common and were often featured in various media publications. Since his inauguration in office, there have been many incidences where Arpaio was informed of matters that were legally admissible and those that were not.

For instance, in 2011 Judge Murray informed the sheriff that detaining immigrants on suspicion grounds was not legally admissible since there is no evidence that the immigrants had or lacked a proper status.

His rule acts rose to the mainstream in 2011 after a lawsuit was filed against Arpaio for violating the rights of Latinos as well as other immigrant groups of people. He defied the charges and even encouraged his team to go on with racial profiling. It was here that Lacey and Larkin decided to expose Arpaio for his inhuman acts.

They wrote an article that exposed the sheriff and for this reason, they were arrested. They were detained for 24 days and upon their release they sued Arpaio and the suit was settled for 3.7 million USD.

After settling the suit, Arpaio lost his re-election bid and in 2017 he was charged with contempt of court. Luckily, his political affiliation with the Trump administration helped him. He had endorsed Donald Trump in 2016 during the presidential campaigns. The president therefore pardoned him.

Jim Lacey attended the Arizona State University before dropping out and publishing the inaugural issue of Phoenix New Times alongside a group of fellow students. The article was a response to the lack of enough media coverage by the local media about campus antiwar protests.

Jim Lacey alongside his business partners Jim Larkin, developed the free weekly newspaper developed and grew its circulation and at the same time coverage more social and political matter. The newspaper became prominent in the country for disclosing political evils and leaders who abused their power.

James Larkin

James Larkin was an activist that was born to Irish parents in Liverpool, England, on January 21, 1876. His early years were spent in poverty, at one point he was sent to live with his grandparents that lived in Newry, Ireland, at the age of five.

James finally reunited with his family and they had all moved to a tiny quaint cottage in Burren, County Down, Ireland, for permanent residency.

His poverty has led him to receive very little education, most of his time was spent working in countless odd jobs during his youth just to make ends meet.

When he turned fourteen, his father had passed away and he had to take apprenticeship at the company his late father worked for. After being dismissed from that job two years later, James found work at a dock and would end up becoming a dock foreman. Read more: Jim Larkin | Biography

He joined the Independent Labour Party after showing extreme interest in socialism around the year of 1893. The Liverpool dock went on strike in 1905, James was one of the few foremen to partake but he jeopardized and lost his position.

The National Union of Dock Labourers were impressed of his performance at the strike and they elected him as a temporary organizer.

In 1907, James Larkin was sent by his union to the capital of Northern Ireland and he recruited more than 400 new employees. As a result, the dock employers became wary of so many new members that they ultimately terminated everyone from the N.U.D.L.

After moving to Dublin, Ireland, he founded the Irish Transport and General Workers’ Union during the winter of 1908. James established a pro-labor and left-wing newspaper called “The Irish Worker and People’s Advocate,” in 1911.

He befriended James Connolly and together, they formed the Irish Labour Party. After major industrial companies began to “lock out” their employees associated with the I.T.G.W.U., hundreds of members went on sympathetic strikes.

he infamous “Dublin Lockout” in 1913 lasted for over seven months and affected thousands of Dublin workers, their families and the employers.

Thor Halvorssen Equates Socialism to Human Rights Violations

Thor Halvorssen of the Human Rights Foundation was recently the featured guest on Fox Business Network’s show “The Intelligence Report with Trish Regan.” Halvorssen was interviewed to provide his unique take on socialism, which he contends can be linked to massive human rights abuses by governments all over the world. The context of the interview was that Bernie Sanders has been promoting a variety of socialist policies for America during his presidential campaign. Even though Halvorssen actually donated to Senator Sanders’ campaign, he takes issue with some of the socialist policies that Sanders has been promoting. According to Buzzfeed, the reason that Halvorssen says he is a  Halvorssen says that Clinton is a much bigger threat to the protection of human rights than Sanders because she has been known to actually conspire with dictators who abuses their citizens’ human rights on a daily basis.

A socialist government will also be responsible for fixing prices, which can drive up the demand for certain essential goods. This can ultimately result in massive food shortages throughout the country. In a dire situation like this, Halvorssen says it is the people who ultimately suffer because the government has gotten out of control. Not having access to essential resources like food and water is a serious violation of human rights, according to Halvorssen. Halvorssen is especially concerned about the rights of the lowest classes in society because they typically lack the resources and power to rise up against the government and correct its course. If this situation goes on long enough, Thor Halvorssen says that a country can be steeped in serious turmoil, which could lead to violence and political upheaval. A socialist government may try to crush this type of turmoil or uprising, which could end in massive human rights violations against its own people. Halvorssen says that the effects of socialism are much more complicated than most people think.
